Brittany is very much a maritime province with naval bases and commercial harbours dotted around and most of France’s fishing fleet operating from its shores. The attractions of the area are obvious: towering cliffs, rock formations and offshore islands and inlets emphazised everywhere by the stone dolmen and menhirs of a prehistoric past. The citadelle of St-Malo, very much the prime destination for visitors, walled and built with the same grey granite stone as Mont St-Michel, St Malo was originally a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance. All this makes Brittany a fascinating and enriching experience.
