Ardmore Educational Travel Christmas Markets - Lille/Bruges - Strasbourg

Available from end of November to end of December The Christmas Market in Strasbourg takes place each year in the city centre, in particular Place Broglie and the Cathedral Square. Traditional gifts, foods and ornaments are on sale from the hundreds of stalls offering their wares to visitors. Your students will probably also want to sample the many foods and treats available.

A huge Christmas tree is planted in Place Kleber and there are many concerts taking place at this time of year – it’s an ideal opportunity for your students to appreciate the Alsatian traditions and culture, whilst soaking up the festive atmosphere.

You will quickly get into the festive spirit at the month-long Lille Christmas market, at the Place Rihour, right in the very heart of town. There are many stalls selling arts, traditional crafts and local cuisine. There’s a wealth of entertainment for children including games and the opportunity to sample local delicacies.

Day 1: Arrival at centre. Meet host families – evening meal
Day 2: AM: Guided visit of Strasbourg: 12th Century cathedral, pedestrian area, and
“La Petite France”. Coach tour of the town crossing “Le Pont de L’Europe” with stop on the
German side of the Rhine. PM: Christmas markets: Place du Broglie and Cathedral area –
see giant Christmas tree (30m high). Return to host family for evening meal
Day 3: Day with host families
Day 4: AM: Visit to Colmar: Pedestrian area and “La Petite Venise”. Visit UnterLinden (collection of Alsacien art and craft). PM: Visit charming villages of Riquewihr and Kayersberg to see picturesque Christmas market. Return to host family for evening meal
Day 5: AM: Strasbourg – guided visit of brasserie Kronenbourg. PM: Boat trip on river l’Ill, visit Bredele Christmas Market specialising in Alsacien cakes and biscuits. Evening walk through Strasbourg to see Christmas lights. Return to host family for evening meal

Amiens - History and Environment of the Somme Region
Just across the Channel, experience the Somme Region for its unique historical and environmental richness. In 3 days, you will walk in the wake of the “Poilus” during the World War One, you will discover a magnificent nature reserve internationally renowned for its great variety of fauna and flora – including over 300 species of migrating birds, and you will enjoy the capital Amiens, famous for its Gothic Cathedral and Medieval quarter of Saint-Leu, also called the Little Venice of the North.

Day 3: Full day excursion to the Somme Bay – experience the environment and tradition of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Natural Reserve of the Somme Bay
AM: Guided visit of the “Maison de la Baie de Somme et de l’Oiseau”: to learn about the different fauna and flora species, followed by a on-sight guided discovery of the Bay PM: Visit the Museum de la Picardie for an insight into the life and tradition of the Picard People, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Free time in Saint-Valéry-de-Somme – a beautifully preserved medieval fishing town where William the Conqueror set off to conquer England in 1066
Day 4: Life during World War One: Full-day excursion
AM: Visit “l’Historial de la Grande Guerre” (the life of the WW1 soldiers in the trenches, drawings, mementoes etc)
PM: Guided tour of the Battlefields between Péronne and Albert where the British troops stayed

AM: Guided visit of the Gothic Cathedral from the 13th century, the 2nd largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage listed Centre
PM: Guided walking tour of the old town, the network of small canals of the Somme and its picturesque floating market gardens – visit to Master Glazier Workshop – see the making of stained glass. Free time for shopping

Nantes - History and Innovation
Nantes is the sixth largest city of France and is regularly voted the best city in France in which to live, for its unique quality of life. A title that is well deserved! The old capital of Brittany, also famous as the birthplace of Jules Verne, it offers an important historical and architectural heritage, beautiful paved streets, great museums, a thriving art scene, as well as plenty of parks and paths to stroll along the River Loire and its affluent l’Erdre. The large student population keeps it dynamic and the proximity of the southern cost of Brittany makes it a great place to explore.

AM: Guided visit of Nantes: the Cathedral and the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, the Place Royale, le Théâtre Graslin, the harbour and l’Ile Feydeau
PM: Guided visit of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, the last of the Loire Châteaux before the Atlantic Ocean including the Nantes History Museum displaying the history of Brittany the history of the port, the Loire, the slave trade, as well as cultural and artistic history
Day 4: Nantes – to its innovative ventures
AM: “The Machines of the Ile de Nantes” – located in the former shipyard, this great innovative centre includes the Machine Gallery – including the Giant Elephant and machines conceived by Jules Verne
PM: visit the Château de Goulaine, in the heart of the Muscadet wine country – discover also the LU Collection recalling the history of the world famous biscuit trade-mark and a unique butterfly farm with hundreds of tropical butterflies flying freely among the visitors
Day 5: Excursion to the Loire Estuary – Saint-Nazaire, Guérande and the Salt Marshes
AM: Saint Nazaire: guided tour of the shipyard Aker Yards to discover the whole process of
shipbuilding, from the steel plate storage area to the outfitting basin. The shipyard is now building the little brothers of the Queen Mary 2: the Fantasia and the Splendida OR Guided tour of Airbus and watch the impressive fuselage sections of the different Airbus aircrafts and the gigantic sections of the A380
PM: visit Guérande: walk around this beautiful fortified medieval city with its Celtic origins, its charming paved streets, the castle, the city wall, the craftmen’s shops. Guided visit of the salt marshes: start the visit at the Maison des Paludiers

Day 1: Arrival in Brussels; check in to residence
Day 2: “A journey through Europe.”
AM: Guided visit of Brussels: discover Brussels and its
architecture including walking tour: the Grand-Place, the Royal
Galleries, Ilot Sacre, Manneken Pis.
PM: Guided visit of “Mini Europe”, at the foot of the Atomium, the only miniature park that will take you through the whole of Europe in just a few hours. Guided visit of the European Parliament (needs to be booked 3 months in advance) OR Visit “the Spirit of Europe” at the European Space Centre: a great interactive multimedia centre with plenty of games to learn all about Europe!
Day 3: The Capital of European Culture.
AM: Departure to Luxembourg; check in to residence.
PM: Visit the City: the railway station district, the ruins of the fortifications, the Casemates, the banking District. Visit the Luxembourg City History Museum: situated in the heart of the old city, the museum illustrates over 1000 years of the history of the Grand Duchy in a very innovative way
Day 4: From Luxembourg to Strasbourg.
AM: Schuman Circular Walk: “On the traces of the father of Europe” a 3-hour tour that will follow in the steps of the Luxembourger Robert Schuman, one of the founders of today’s European Union. A great European history class!
PM: Departure to Strasbourg; check in the residence – free time
Day 5: Strasbourg and the Conseil de l’Europe.
AM: Guided tour of the city by coach, including the European quarter & walking tour of the Old town around the Cathedral and La Petite France: La Maison Kammerzell, la place Gutenberg, the old houses of the Tanners.
PM: Guided visit of the “Conseil de l’Europe” including a film on the institution

Residential Programme in Rheims - Champagne & History

Rheims plays a hugely important role in French history as it was the place where French monarchs were crowned. It stands in the Ardenne region of northern France, only 89 miles east-northeast of Paris. It’s history stems from its foundation by the Gauls and grew in
importance after it became a major city during the period of the Roman Empire.

It often considered as the capital of Champagne because it is by far the largest city in the region.

Our programme combines visit to the cellars producing the area’s most famous product as well as excursions to the major historical sights which shaped the region.
